Stories That Shape Us: Writing for—and Inspiring—Young Readers

October 19 @ 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm
$5 – $10

with Uma Krishnaswami and Giselle Vriesen

Join authors Giselle Vriesen and Uma Krishnaswami for a powerful conversation about writing stories that resonate with today’s youth. From fantasy worlds to real-world challenges, both authors create books that speak to themes of identity, belonging, and transformation. In this dynamic panel, they’ll reflect on the books that inspired them as young readers and how their own work aims to spark creativity and courage in the next generation of storytellers. Together, they’ll explore how to balance entertainment with deeper meaning and how to approach complex topics like mental health, climate change, and racism in ways that are thoughtful and age appropriate. Educators, parents, and young writers alike will come away with fresh insights and practical tips for nurturing storytelling skills—and a greater appreciation for the power of diverse, inclusive children’s literature. This is a conversation about stories that matter—and the young people who need them.
