For over 60 years, the Massey Lectures has been regarded as one of the most acclaimed lecture series in Canada. This annual five-part series, hosted in five cities across the country, is co-sponsored by CBC Radio, House of Anansi Press and Massey College in the University of Toronto. It is broadcast each November on CBC’s Ideas.
Poet and novelist Ian Williams is the newest name to join a long list of thinkers, writers and scholars, as the 2024 CBC Massey lecturer. In advance of Victoria’s event, he will share with VFA attendees the questions that have shaped this year’s series: Why can’t we talk to each other? How can we talk to each other? And what do we need to talk about right now? Williams hopes to ignite a national conversation and to make space for “conversations without agenda. Conversations without the intent to persuade and to convert — just conversations for the sake of relating one human being to another.”
