The Story at the Heart of the Story: A Workshop in Memoir with Carla Funk

Mondays, April 4-25, 7:00-9:00 PDT

In this four-week course, you’ll write toward the one glowing story deep at the core of the bigger story. Each session will include creative lessons on craft, a few readings to fuel your writing, and in-class experiments that get your pen moving on the page. Whether you have a memoir on the go or are new to the genre, this class is designed to help you find the story at the heart of your story—and write it. At the end of our four weeks together, writers may submit up to 12 pages for general—and encouraging!—feedback.

Carla Funk is the author of five books of poetry and two memoirs, the most recent of which is Mennonite Valley Girl: A Wayward Coming of Age (Greystone, 2021). After teaching in UVic’s Writing Department for 15 years, she now leads private workshops and writing groups for pure fun.
